an excess build up of uric acid. The excess uric acid builds up in the
joints and causes pain and inflammation leading to difficulty using the
joint.  Uric acid is one of the end products after the break-up of
purines by the kidneys. Purines are an important ingredient of certain
foods that we consume.

Gout and fasting are quite closely
linked. Gout can be triggered by diet variations and changes. Eating too
much of certain food items can lead to a flare up. At the same time,
crash dieting or fasting can also lead to a gout flare-up. When you
fast, the body processes fat stored in tissues which is usually
purine-rich and this leads to the rise in uric acid because of an
increase in purine input. Fasting also increases dehydration which leads
to a rise of uric acid.

You can control gout
by controlling your intake of some foods and increasing your intake of
foods that can reduce the uric acid levels. Remember to avoid fasting
and drink plenty of water even while you improve your diet. Some of the
foods you can and should eat to reduce uric acid levels include:

  • Potassium-rich fruits like bananas, potatoes and green leafy vegetables
  • Raw vegetable juice, especially carrot juice, cucumber juice, and if you can drink, even raw string bean juice
One
particular home remedy also says that though people with gout should
not starve, they can try a diet of just orange juice. Drinking a lot of
orange juice and no other food is believed to help bring uric acid under
control. An orange juice diet should be continued for 5-7 days for
immediate relief.  But this home remedy can be dangerous and you should
consider getting your doctor to vet this treatment.

If you have
high uric acid, you should also avoid some foods. These foods are high
in purines and should be avoided till uric acid levels become normal.

  • Red meat
  • Eggs
  • Anchovies
  • Organ meat like kidney and liver
  • Tuna and sardines
  • Beans, legumes and lentils
  • Turkey
  • Asparagus
  • Bacon
  • Sugared drinks
  • Excess salt
  • Canned and processed food
  • Liquor
  • Tea and coffee
  • Additional spices
All
these tips are just guidelines. You might not want to adopt them
completely. A doctor’s or a dietician’s guideline might work better.
